Steam Locos

HSB Steam Loco, 99 6001-4, Sound

In 1939, Krupp built this powerful locomotive as the prototype for a series of standardized narrow-gauge locos. World War II stopped development of the series, but the prototype has survived on the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen (HSB) network. Today, it still carries local passengers and international tourists through the dark forests of the Harz Mountains. This LGB model sounds like a real steam loco because it reproduces the actual, digitized sounds of a real steam loco. You´ll hear the synchronized chuffs, the bell, the whistle, the air pump and even a leaking boiler. With the LGB Multi-Train System, you get remote control of all these sounds and more. Of course, this big LGB model has a smoke generator, lighted cab, directional lanterns, voltage stabilization and the quality you expect from LGBÑThe Big Train

The Prototype
This compact and powerful locomotive was built by the Krupp Locomotive Works in 1939. The loco used superheated steam to pull trains weighing up to 80 metric tons (88 U.S. tons) up the 3% grades of the Nordhausen-Wernigeroder Eisenbahn (NWE), also known as “Harzquerbahn.” This meter-gauge line links the towns in the deep valleys and picturesque peaks of the Harz Mountains. After 1949, the NWE became part of the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR), and the loco was renumbered DR 99 6001. In 1990, Germany was reunified, and the railroad was privatized and was renamed the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen (HSB - Harz Narrow Gauge Railways). Today the loco still operates in the Harz on the Selketalbahn line.
