Zillertal Set, Collector Edition

In Austria´s famed Tyrol region, you´ll find the Ziller Valley, an Alpine wonder of rural towns, green fields, tall peaks and white glaciers. Chartered in 1899, the narrow-gauge Zillertalbahn today provides regular rail service in modern diesel-powered trains. However, the Zillertalbahn still offers spectacular steam service that attracts railfans from around the world. You can experience the sights and sounds of a prototypical Zillertal train with this Collector Edition LGB set. It includes the classic U-series "Raimund" steam loco with digital sound plus one four-axle coach and two two-axle coaches. All are specially decorated and numbered for this set.

The Prototype
The famous Zillertalbahn runs through the picturesque Ziller Valley in Tyrolia, surrounded by the towering peaks of the Alps. While often thought as a tourist attraction, the railway was and is an important local transportation link. Until the 1960s - the era depicted by this set - trains were hauled by steam locomotives. When diesels replaced steam on most everyday trips, regular steam operations continued during the summer months to the delight of tourists and locals alike. U1 "Raimund," the prototype of this model, was built at the Krauss Locomotive Works in 1900, as one of the first locomotives for the Zillertalbahn. It is one of numerous “U Series” locos that ran on narrow gauge railways throughout Austria.
