ÖBB Steam Loco, 298.56
Austria’s most famous steam locos are the unique “U-series” 0-6-2s. And amazingly, U-series number 298.56 -- which was built in the year 1900 -- still runs today on the Taurachbahn, a museum railway operated by Austria’s “Club 760” narrow gauge preservation group. With this LGB model, you can capture the distinctive look of the handsome U-series, including the hefty side-mounted water tanks. The cab doors open to reveal a lighted and detailed cab. An onboard Multi-Train System decoder makes digital operation easy. Includes a smoke generator, directional lanterns and voltage stabilization circuitry.
The Prototype
The U-series steam locos are among the best-known Austrian locomotives. Starting in 1889, seventy of these reliable 0-6-2 locos were built at the Krauss & Co. locomotive works. With a light axle load and an adequate top speed of 35 to 45 km/h (22 to 28 mph), the U-series were used almost universally on the many 2 1/2 foot gauge lines in Austria.
U-series number 298.56 -- which was built in the year 1900 -- still runs today on the Taurachbahn, a museum railway operated by Austria’s “Club 760” narrow gauge preservation group.
