RhB Ele Loco Ge 4/4 III, 652

The Ge 4/4 III electric locomotives are among the most modern narrow gauge locos anywhere. Starting in 1999, a new series of these locomotives, equipped with the latest three-phase technology, was purchased by Switzerland’s Rhätische Bahn. These “Paradepferds” (“show horses”) are the pride of the RhB, and this model from LGB also features modern technology: The pantographs raise and lower automatically so that the rear pantograph is raised to the overhead catenary. Directional lighting changes from white to red. The front cab and instrument panel are illuminated. Powered by two Bühler motors, the model easily pulls heavy trains on mountainous layouts.

The Prototype
Since 1993, Switzerland’s Rhätische Bahn has purchased modern, high-performance Ge 4/4 III locomotives to pull heavy passenger and freight trains. With a power output of 2400 KW (3200 hp) and a top speed of 100 kph (64 mph), these locos currently are among the most advanced narrow gauge locomotives anywhere. The first of its type, No. 641 "Maienfeld," also was the first RhB loco to wear advertising on its sides. Today, a number of these locos feature advertising for regional businesses. These distinctive locomotives are colorful accents to the trains of the RhB.
