The Prototype
The U-series steam locos are among the best-known Austrian locomotives. Starting in 1889, seventy of these reliable 0-6-2 locos were built at the Krauss & Co. locomotive works. With a light axle load and an adequate top speed of 35 to 45 km/h (22 to 28 mph), the U-series were used almost universally on the many 2 1/2 foot gauge lines in Austria. Later, it served on the Lokalbahn Payerbach-Hirschwang, and recently, it was part of the collection of the ÖGEG (Österreichische Gesellschaft für Eisenbahngeschichte), an Austrian rail preservation organization.
