BEG Diesel Loco, D4, Sound

This big, narrow-gauge diesel -- with two 270 horsepower engines under the hood -- worked on the Brohltalbahn (BEG), a meter-gauge railway connecting the Rhein River town of Brohl to Engeln. The railway offers passenger consists, like the “Vulkan-Express,” which lets tourists see the region’s long-dormant volcanoes. It also carries real freight loads, primarily “Phonolith,” a volcanic rock that is mined along the line. Today, this locomotive operates on the Swiss Rhätische Bahn.
The LGB model is painted in the authentic green/beige livery of the BEG. It’s powered by twin Bühler motors, and it offers LGB’s acclaimed digital sound, with starting, “notch” synchronized diesel, auxiliary diesel, air compressor, safety valve, horn, bell and idle sounds. And even more sounds are available, by remote control, on Multi-Train System layouts!

This is an eXtra product.

The Prototype
In 1958, MaK in Kiel/Germany built a modern diesel-hydraulic locomotive for the Alsenschen Zementwerke (Cement Factory of Ahlsen). After its line was abandoned, the powerful locomotive was not scrapped, but sold and used on the Kreisbahn Leer-Aurich-Wittmund in northwestern Germany. Then it was sold to the Brohltalbahn (BEG), a meter-gauge railway going from the Rhine River town of Brohl into the Eifel mountains. The railway offers passenger consists, like the “Vulkan-Express,” which lets tourists see the region’s long-dormant volcanoes. It also carries real freight loads, primarily “Phonolith,” a volcanic rock that is mined along the line. Today, this loco operates as No. 241 at the Rhätische Bahn in Switzerland.
